How to Find Out What Your Insurance Covers
Insurance websites and plan documents can be difficult to interpret. A few basic steps can help identify the correct plan, covered-drug list, and person to contact.
Start with these steps
- 1
Identify the exact insurance plan
Find the details that distinguish your specific plan from others administered by the same company.
- Plan name
- Plan year
- Member-services number
- Prescription-benefit number
- Employer, Marketplace, Medicare, or Medicaid plan type
Do not enter this information into GLP-1 Primer.
- 2
Find the covered-drug list
It may be called a formulary, drug list, preferred drug list, or prescription formulary.
- 3
Search the exact medication
Note what the plan says about it.
- Whether it appears
- Tier
- Prior authorization
- Step therapy
- Quantity limits
- 4
Call the correct plan representative
Ask about your exact plan rather than the insurance company’s plans generally.
- 5
Ask for the answer in writing when possible
Record the details so you can refer back later.
- Date
- Department contacted
- Reference number
- Location of the plan document
Do not create an online organizer. GLP-1 Primer does not store this information.
Five questions to ask
- 1Is this exact medication covered by my specific plan?
- 2Is it covered for the reason prescribed?
- 3Is prior authorization or step therapy required?
- 4What pharmacy must I use?
- 5What should I expect to pay?
If answers conflict or remain unclear
- 1Ask for a member-services supervisor.
- 2Contact the prescription-benefit administrator.
- 3Contact the employer benefits office when coverage is job-based.
- 4Contact the appropriate Marketplace, Medicare, or Medicaid resource when applicable.
- 5Ask the prescribing office or pharmacy what coverage response they received.
- 6Request written confirmation or a formal coverage decision.
A verbal estimate does not guarantee payment.
